The Canine Combat Terrain System

The way terrain in Canine Combat is done is through what's called a heightmap. A heightmap is basically just a regular bitmap, except you use white colors to represent hills/mountains and black colors to represent pits/ditches.

You can see what the hightmap and texture map look like below.

The texture map is the image on the top left and the heightmap is the image on the right. The heightmap is what sculpts the geometry whereas the texture is used to add the detail.
